The beauty of a breakfast nook

By Sophie, Interior Designer at A7

If your dining table only gets used at Christmas, you’re not alone. For many of us, the formal dining space is just that – a bit too formal for every day.

That’s why I love a breakfast nook - a small, comfy dining area, usually tucked into a corner of your kitchen or near a window, with built-in benches or a snug table-and-chairs setup.

It’s cosy. It’s casual. And it’s got that "slow morning on holiday" vibe.

A breakfast nook reminds me of being on holiday, You’re not rushing out the door — you’re sitting down and enjoying your food. It sets a slower, more peaceful tone to your day.

Family space

A breakfast nook is great addition for family houses – it can double as a homework station, a space to decorate biscuits, or a place to gather and chat after school. And for kids, it can help them to get involved in the cooking process - they can see what's going on in the kitchen, ask questions and chop veggies at the table.

It’s also the antidote to kitchen chaos.
Instead of everyone crowding around the hob or perching awkwardly on barstools, the nook gives folks a comfy corner to gather. You’re in the heart of the home, but you’re not in the way.

Cosy corner, big impact

Design-wise, a nook doesn’t need loads of space — just a clever layout and the right mix of furniture and texture. Think bench seating with soft cushions, warm wood finishes, a great pendant light overhead and maybe even a handy bench seat with hidden storage.

A breakfast nook invites you in — it’s a welcoming place to hang out, chat, or just sip your morning coffee.
